Robert Thresh

My dear husband Robert hung up his "She Quilts, I Cook" apron yesterday afternoon.

He has been my mainstay for 46 years. He passed on peacefully after a short illness which struck him on March 30. Occasionally I’ve bragged on this blog about the wonderful things he created in the kitchen. He was a splendid provider and did all the shopping and cooking for our home.

There is a webpage with some of his recipes which you can visit by clicking on Cooking with Robert. His favorite jam recipe was strawberry-pear (substitute strawberries for the blackberries in the recipe on his page).

Who will fill his size 14 shoes?

  10. I was thinking about you yesterday - you and Robert were on my mind. Saying prayers for you.

    This is for you:

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!

  12. Christine, I'm so sorry. So very sorry.

By all accounts, he did and left much to be proud of and was a good man. I feel certain that he had a good and interesting life with you, and that you were a great comfort to him during this final transition. I hope that the rest of us can now help provide some measure of comfort to you.

My heart is with you at this transition time. You two made such a great couple. I remember when he drove you over to Pirate's so we could all go to the quilt show. Your feet were bothering you and he didn't want you to get too tired out.

Take joy and comfort in your memories and your family.

Christine: I am a long-time follower of your blog and purchaser of your patterns, and I always enjoyed when you would post about things you and Robert did together and especially how you two celebrated various milestones, anniversaries, etc. What a loss for you and your family. We about.com quilters love you dearly, and you are in our thoughts and prayers.

  34. Christine - I am sad for you and your family. And, strangely, for myself because I never met your very special guy. The Mary Frye poem that Gerrie wrote out gave me a lot of comfort when my husband died and I hope it will also comfort you. Hold those good memories in your heart. A trip to meet, have lunch and go to the quilt shop is even more important now - sometime this summer, eh?

  38. Oh, Christine, your news hit me like a blow to the chest. I was reminded of you early yesterday evening when I saw a a flower seedhead down by the creek. It reminded me of your hair, very white and soft. A second later half the seed fluff was gone in one strong gust of wind.

  52. Christine. I just clicked onto your blog for the first time ever just now. I saw the apron and it made me smile. I'm married to a chef who RARELY cooks for me and I am forever being sort-of cranky about it when I am SO wanting to quilt and he is not inclined to cook. I will stop complaining and love him more and cherish the time that we still have together. I was so moved by your post. You're a brave woman. I will be thinking of you and remembering you in my prayers.

Christine, It was an honor to work with you and Robert and get to know you both. Now I am 3,000 miles away and wishing I could have seen him again in recent years. I'll never forget you describing how you felt about him about thirty-six years ago. You made me understand that a real deep friendship makes a marriage beautiful. Friends to the core. My deepest sympathy and many hugs to you. Love, Marlene
