Friday Flashback -- Orinda Park Pool

This picture was taken in 1953 by Wayne Miller at the Orinda Park Pool.

It IS quilt related. I found Joan Samuelson’s Journal Quilt on her blog Rosegardenquilts (November 2 and November 3, 2007). The quilt is her impression of the Orinda Park Pool. I spent my entire childhood there.

I am the girl holding a coke bottle sitting next to my hunky boyfriend, Jim Anderson. He was the boy who gave me my first serious kiss. Judy Henderson, my neighbor up the hill, is on the right. I don’t know who the woman is, nor do I recognize the small children.

oh geez...now I have to look for the pool we went to in that area. Mom remembers calling it the "Orinda Pool". Was it like a country club deal?

My goodness! Mr. Miller is certainly a talented photographer, to put it mildly. Was this a "staged" photo or a candid? I've been sitting here admiring the way he captured a moment in time, the way everyone's eyes are on the young man downing the soda, and how the lines of the pool and the group form a "Z" shape that lead one's eyes through the photo. The lighting is somehow amazing too; everyone has a glow about them.

Thanks for sharing it and some of the details behind it.

By the way - here's a page with a little history on what I assume is the same pool:

Wonderful photo, & as Tanya says, a moment captured in time.
I went to check out the quilt, & think it a lovely representation.

This is so cool! I meant to drop you a note to encourage you to post your picture but somehow I've been swamped. What a treasure trove! I'd heard about Wayne Miller. Did you check out the history page on the OPP website? Did you call it OPP back in the day?

Vicky: There are ten pools in the Orinda area. OCC or Orinda Country Club is one. OPP or Orinda Park Pool or just Park Pool is our pool. We have a pool association, now known as the OMPA, which holds one of the biggest recreational swim meets in the country. It was formerly known as the All-Orinda Swim Meet.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find
this topic to be really something which I think I would never understand.
It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me.
I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the
hang of it!

When I initially commented I clicked the "Notify me when new comments are added"
checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four e-mails with the same comment.
Is there any way you can remove me from that service?
Thanks a lot!

I know this if off topic but I'm looking into starting my own blog and was wondering what all is needed to get setup? I'm assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny?
I'm not very internet smart so I'm not 100% sure. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Appreciate it

Write more, thats all I have to say.
Literally, it seems as though you relied on the video to make your point.
You clearly know what youre talking about, why waste
your intelligence on just posting videos to your blog
when you could be giving us something informative to read?

When I initially commented I appear to have clicked on the -Notify me when new comments are added-

There has to be an easy method you can remove me from that service?
Many thanks!
