Aucuba

Our third “watch” cat, Aucuba, is gone as of yesterday. She was almost 18 years old.
She was born under an Aucuba bush in our friend’s back yard in 1992. Her mother was a feral cat.
We will miss her feisty ways.

Christine, I'm so sorry for your loss. 18 years is a long time to be together, but I know that it doesn't matter; it's still so hard when it's their time to go.

How are your other two watch cats handling the loss?

So sorry to hear of Aucuba's passing, Christine. 18 years is a good long run for a cat, and she will always be with you in memory of her funny, idiosyncratic ways. Hugs...

Thank you all.
Sophie asked how the two other cats were doing.

The two other cats -- Feather (white and fluffy) and Blackie (all black) seem back to normal today.

Yesterday, when Aucuba was in distress and having a hard time walking or balancing, both Blackie and Feather came to watch her. They stayed in the room a few feet from her and looked and looked for quite some time.
Aucuba has never expressed any positive interest in the two other cats. When they arrived she hissed and spit at them for well over a year. For the past couple of years she has remained indifferent towards them.
Feather has repeatedly made friendly gestures. He came up many times and gave Aucuba a lick on the head but she just pretended he wasn't there. She did not run away or hiss or complain. They have been eating side by side with no fuss for a couple of years.

Funny old gal.

I am sure she had a good life with you. I loved reading that Feather really tried to show his fondness of her. Thank goodness you have 2 others to help with missing Aucuba.
